Industrial Blower Fan Ventilation System

Industrial Blower Fan Ventilation System

This article will discuss options for improving energy efficiency when designing an HVAC system and selecting a fan. HVAC design engineers face many choices throughout the planning process, perhaps few as crucial as that of fan equipment, a principal consumer of energy.

Industrial Blowers & Fans Flow Rates

Flow rates are predetermined based on space type and occupancy. Although local codes determine minimum requirements for HVAC systems, ASHRAE Handbook – HVAC Applications provides general design criteria for various commercial and public buildings. These criteria include air movement, room circulation, noise, and filter efficiency. Although all are important, room circulation, in air changes per hour, typically determines airflow requirements. Because flow rate is driven by design criteria, a design engineer’s primary means of reducing energy use is to minimize the static pressure needed to move air through a system.

Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International defines system pressure loss as “the sum of the static-pressure losses due to friction, shock, dissipation of velocity pressure at the system discharge, and the static-pressure differences between the entry and discharge openings of an air system. The static pressure a fan must overcome is dependent on many variables, only some of which the design engineer can control. The location of equipment often is determined by the architect and, therefore, limits the engineer’s options.

Blowers and Fans Duct Configuration

Duct configuration and fittings used to connect components are large contributors to static pressure. Other sources of system pressure loss are balancing and control dampers, variable-air-volume (VAV) boxes, diffusers, louvers, coils, filters, and other components in an air stream. Given that velocity pressure is proportional to the square of velocity, pressure loss in most of these components is proportional to velocity squared. This makes size an important factor, as cross-sectional area dictates fluid velocity. For example, reducing air velocity throughout a system by 10 percent would result in a 20-percent reduction in system static pressure. With air power proportional to pressure, this would equate to a 20-percent reduction in energy consumption.

In addition to accounting for all static-pressure loss in a system and achieving required room airflow, a design engineer must adhere to Section 6.5.3 of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, which limits the power (horsepower) a fan can consume per cubic foot per minute of airflow the fan generates. With flow requirements defined, a design engineer must limit system static pressure to meet this power limitation.

System Effect and Industrial Fans and Blowers

A major contributor to energy consumption that often is ignored is system effect. AMCA International defines system effect as “a decrease in fan performance capability, observed as a pressure loss, which results from the effect of fan-inlet restrictions/obstructions, fan-outlet restrictions, or other conditions influencing the performance of the fan when it is installed in a system.”2 System effect is a reduction in a fan’s ability to generate pressure and can be looked at as an additional system pressure loss. It can lead to underperformance, excessive noise, and vibration in a fan and system.

System Effect and Fan Curves

System effect can be described by its impact on a fan curve. Fan curves are produced from laboratory testing, with fans configured for ideal installations. Testing is performed in accordance with ANSI/AMCA Standard 210-07/ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 51-2007, Laboratory Methods of Testing Fans for Certified Aerodynamic Performance Rating. A fan curve displays performance for a constant speed (revolutions per minute) in terms of static pressure vs. volumetric flow rate. In Figure 1, the intersection of the system-resistance curve and the pressure curve is the operating point of the fan. To move along the system curve to alter fan performance, one must increase or decrease fan speed accordingly. Operating power is where the power curve intersects with a vertical line running through the operating point.

Ideal Industrial Blower Fan Inlet & Outlet Conditions

The ideal inlet and outlet conditions under which fans are tested rarely are seen in the field. As a result, a fan will overperform or underperform in terms of flow rate, static pressure, or both. In Figure 2, a suitable fan was selected, but system effect was ignored. The blue lines represent how the fan would perform under AMCA International test conditions. Actual measured performance is indicated by the red dot. The red line shows how the fan would perform in an AMCA International air test when operating at design speed, but takes into account system effect. The only way to achieve the desired performance is to speed the fan to the rate designated by the green line. The consequence is a higher operating speed, higher brake horsepower, and higher sound levels.

Propeller Fan & Tube Axial Fan Selection

Another key to reducing power consumption is fan selection. Generally, propeller or tube-axial fans are more efficient for relatively low static pressures, while centrifugal-type fans are used for relatively high static pressures. Too often, fan selection is based solely on first cost. The consequence is that a relatively small-diameter, high-speed fan is used. A small fan operating at a high speed generally requires more operating power and produces more noise than a large fan operating at a low speed.

Most of the energy lost in a system is converted to heat. For example, mechanical and electrical energy losses in a fan motor raise the surface temperature of the motor. If the motor is in an air stream, the heat will be transferred directly to the air.

Belt Dive Propeller Fans and other Blower Fan Systems

In a belt-driven system, losses are the result of belt friction, slippage, and / or flexing. All such losses are converted to heat and, if the belt drive is in an air stream, increase the temperature of air. Fan losses quantified by fan efficiency contribute to air-temperature rise as well. As a fan works on a fluid, the friction attributed to the airflow decreases the fan’s efficiency and creates heat. As the efficiency of a system decreases, air-temperature rise increases. In a cooling application, this means increased energy consumption on the part of the compressor. Minimizing inefficiencies results in energy savings. It is the engineer’s responsibility to minimize total system pressure through proper design and layout. This involves balancing economics and efficiencies in specifying a fan. But not all responsibility resides with the engineer. The contractor must ensure appropriate equipment is installed and not base decisions solely on the lowest bid. The contractor needs to be aware of the consequences of poor installation and minimize system effects.

The losses accrued in a system directly affect the system’s power consumption while indirectly increasing the energy consumed by other processes. Energy losses in the form of heat equate to higher operating costs.

Because performance conditions are mandated by codes, proper system design, equipment selection, and installation are the most effective means of minimizing inefficiencies and saving energy.

Proper Operation of Axial & Centrifugal Blowers and Fans

Proper Operation of Axial Blowers and Fans

In axial flow fan the air must blow in line with the axis of rotation and there must be blades with space between them. With few exceptions, the axial blower or fan must not have a lot of back pressure and will work a lot better if the blade is shrouded. One obvious exception is the turbine compressor used in jet engines, but this requires very tight fittings and very high speed so the air is being rammed in against the outgoing air much faster than it can move – it uses a lot of power and makes a lot of noise. Shrouding works better because the greatest loss in an unshrouded fan is the air coming off near the tips and immediately turning out and back circulating only through the fan and not through the room. The most common shrouded fan people see is muffin style fan in computers. An axial blower can have multiple sets of blades and the blades can even over lap so light is not visible through the fan. Fans are used most often for moving large quantities of air between spaces at atmospheric pressure.

Centrifugal Blowers

Centrifugal blowers come in a number of forms of which the most common is the squirrel cage blower. The common factor is the air is moving perpendicular to the axis of the part that is moving the air. Typically, the air is drawn in through the side of the unit, turns at low speed to encounter the inside of a spinning cylinder with ribs or vanes around the wall of the cylinder which fling the air out and away where it is captured and aimed through an outlet much smaller than the inlet. Think of taking an open tin can, drilling a hole in the center of the bottom to take a bolt as an axle and cutting slots up the sides, bending the material of the slots in, then spinning it with a drill. A variation looks like a plate with ribs running from the center and increasing in height toward the rim, the air being thrown off the rim. The name squirrel cage comes from the appearance like the tread wheel small rodents use for exercise – I suspect it is not called a hamster tread wheel because that is too precise – or childish. Blowers can have higher output pressures, but not a lot higher and they lose capacity rapidly with increasing pressure.

Common Blower Uses

Aside from the small squirrel cage blowers used on some electrical equipment, the most common blowers of this type are the units used for drying carpet after cleaning or a fire, the blowers used for leaf sweeping and the unit hidden inside a vacuum cleaner.

Industrial Blower Installation

Caution is necessary in selecting blowers for series installation. It is generally accepted that most pre-engineered blowers are capable of withstanding twice their catalog rated static pressure. In other words, where two blowers are installed in series the second blower housing should withstand the higher pressure. There is, however, a need for concern when the combined pressure exceeds twice the rated static pressure for one blower. In series applications involving three or more blowers, or in any system in which positive or negative pressure exists prior to the consideration of the blowers, special housing reinforcement may be necessary.

Industrial Blowers, Fans and Ventilation

Industrial Blowers, Fans and Ventilation

In almost any building or room used for commercial and industrial operations, it is quite likely that there are recurrent conditions that cause personnel discomfort. This is particularly true unless an expensive system for the circulation of refrigerated air (air conditioning) has been provided. In mild to hot weather, the discomfort of individuals is generally due to the build-up of intense heat within the structure. This becomes a severe problem in summer because the sun load on the building is added to the normal sources of heat build-up within the building. Most buildings have sufficient ventilation to remove smoke and fumes detrimental to health. However, it is unlikely that that system contributes very much toward the comfort of the individuals who occupy the mom or building.

Industrial Blowers and Fans for Ventilation

Humans are warm blooded animals whose normal body temperature is 98.6° Fahrenheit. However, we are most comfortable when the air temperature around us is in the 72°-to-78° range. If there is air motion around us, the effect of “wind chill”, or evaporative cooling, enables us to feel comfortable in a much higher air temperature. As the natural air temperature in most non-air conditioned buildings is much warmer than outside air temperatures, the problem of keeping humans comfortable is primarily a cooling problem. Of course, this is not the case in periods of very cold weather. Our purpose is to discuss the environmental problems that frequently exist in periods of moderate to hot weather. An effective, economical solution of these problems is vital to the success of any business.

Proper Industrial Fan Ventilation

If an individual is to produce maximum results, he must be allowed to function in an environment as nearly ideal as can be provided. In fact, the benefits in terms of efficiency and productivity can be substantial. Failure to provide a comfortable environment can be very expensive in terms of errors, work slow-down, complaints, absenteeism, etc. If the major factor is a hot, humid atmosphere, which may include smoke, dust, fumes or other irritants, a practical and effective approach to the problem is available. To obtain a reasonable degree of personnel comfort in hot weather, there are three basic factors that should be provided for in the ventilation and cooling system of a commercial or industrial building.

How to Remove Superheated Air Using Industrial Blowers & Fans

When the air temperature in the occupied area of a room or building exceeds 78° to 82°; most individuals begin to feel uncomfortably warm. The first step toward controlling the problem is to provide for the removal of excessively hot air from the building. This superheated air frequently mixes with the air in cooler areas of the building to produce an overall temperature increase. As superheated air is frequently localized around heat-producing machinery, it should be exhausted from the building near its source. This will prevent some undesirable air temperature increase in other areas. As a rule, outside air temperatures are considerably cooler than those inside a building. As superheated air is exhausted, provision should be made to replace it with fresh, cooler, outside air. Exhaust air in many areas of a building may have a temperature of 125° to 150°. This is usually the case where heat-producing machinery is in use. Similar air temperatures frequently occur near the roof or ceiling where rising warm air is trapped and further heated by the sun load on the roof. When this high temperature air is replaced by outside air, a substantial improvement in the average air temperature of the building results. Even where outside air temperature may be in the 80s or 90s, invariably it is 15° to 20° cooler than the air it replaces. This is a very important improvement to the individuals affected.

Industrial Blower Fan “Breeze Conditioning”

A very effective way to overcome the discomfort of a hot, stuffy room is to create a breeze. Before refrigerated air systems were invented, mechanical fans of every description were used to provide air circulation. The circulation of air over a person’s body immediately causes a cooling effect on the skin. When air is passed over a moist surface, it will evaporate some of the moisture and thus lower the temperature of the surface. This is precisely what occurs when air circulates across the human body.

By creating a gentle breeze throughout a room or area, a great deal of cooling comfort is provided for individuals who must work there. This pattern of air circulation is called “breeze conditioning” by Canada Blower engineers. It is effective even when the air temperature may be 85°’ to 95°. When this air circulation is achieved in combination with the factors mentioned in the paragraphs above, a very effective and practical solution is provided for the problem of personnel discomfort in hot weather.

Industrial Fans and Blowers vs Commercial Fans & Blowers

Industrial Fans and Blowers vs Commercial Fans & Blowers

There is a difference between industrial and commercial grade fans construction. Industrial equipment is specifically designed and built to stand up to the rigors of an industrial application. The differences are concrete and easy to spot…if you know what to look for. Canada Blower designs and builds equipment strictly for industrial applications and has been doing it that way for over 100 years. Industrial fans and blowers are constructed of heavier duty materials and with higher quality components than their commercial counterparts. When properly applied, industrial equipment can withstand vibration, high and low temperatures, fumes and corrosive gases, materials in the airstream, and many other situations in an industrial environment. The equipment is built to provide longer service life, thus decreasing the need and frequency for replacements. Because industrial fans are expected to last longer, they are designed to be easy to install and maintain.

Industrial Blower Fan Features vs Commercial Blowers Fans

The best way to see the difference between an industrial product and a commercial product is to compare them feature for feature, including product weights. In the below example we’ll look at commercial panel fans versus Canada Blower industrial panel fans. The commercial grade panel fan has sheet metal, riveted blades, and a riveted hub. Canada Blower industrial panel fans have a solid, one-piece cast aluminum airfoil propeller or a cast aluminum adjustable pitch propeller. Lighter fans sometimes have balance weights clipped, bolted, or welded to the back of the fan blades, which can fly off during operation. Canada Blower cast aluminum propellers are precision ground and balanced, and therefore require no balance weights.

Industrial Fan Aerodynamic Design

Another difference between the commercial and industrial fan is in the aerodynamic design. Canada Blower originally developed the air seal venturi to improve performance. With this design, the propeller is larger in diameter than the venturi opening, thus creating an air seal. This design eliminates back flow of air pressure and increases air delivery by 10% or more. The way most other panel fans are designed, the propeller is smaller than the venturi opening. This type of fan is easier to manufacture, but significantly less efficient. The basket fan provides even less value because of the air that is lost around the sides of the fan. A Canada Blower venturi design fan pushes the air velocity from the blades out the front of the fan for increased spread and throw versus a commercial type fan.

Industrial Fans for Shipment

There are also installation differences to consider when purchasing a panel fan. Many commercial fans are shipped in parts. The motor and accessories may be shipped loose and must be assembled to the fan when received. In addition the commercial fan shown on the previous page has no provision for panel mounting or for accessory mounting. This means holes for bolts and mounting hardware must be drilled even before it can be completely assembled or installed. Canada Blower panel fans are shipped completely assembled and ready to install. A large selection of industrial fans are available from the stock program for quick shipment, including panel fan ventilators. You can be sure that Canada Blower equipment will provide many years of continuous service in your industrial air moving environment !

Industrial Blowers and Fans Ventilators and Industrial Ventilation

Industrial Blowers and Fans Ventilators and Industrial Ventilation

Energy recovery applications typically use two fans that provide air through a heat exchanger that “treats” the air by heating or cooling it before it enters the building. Canada Blower ’s plenum and forward curved fans are typically used for energy recovery applications and offer a wide range of performance and flexibility. Generator rooms require a wide range of fans to optimize the performance of generators and other equipment. Exhaust fans are used to prevent heat buildup within the generator room, while supply fans are used to provide fresh air for combustion and efficient generator performance. Room size, space limitations, and mounting capabilities will determine the exact type of fan needed for each specific application. As a leading manufacturer of air moving equipment, Canada Blower offers numerous fan types for meeting any generator room specification.

Industrial Pressure Blowers

Elevator shafts require proper air moving equipment to provide smoke control in the event of a fire. Pressurization is used to prevent smoke from migrating through elevator shafts to other floors, similar to how fans are used to control smoke in stairwells. Today’s elevator pressurization systems are designed to allow elevators to be used by firefighting teams. However, some systems are designed for the evacuation of handicapped individuals. While small amounts of smoke in an elevator may be tolerated by firefighters, smoke in an elevator and its entry and exit paths is unacceptable. Canada Blower ’s complete offering of smoke and heat exhaust fans are relied upon for elevator shaft exhaust/pressurization in emergency situations. Jet bridges are hallways used by passengers to board commercial airplanes. While these bridges are portable and movable, their continuous use requires an exhaust fan or gravity ventilator to prevent air from becoming stagnant. Fans and ventilators draw air into the bridge from the terminal and through the exit which is then exhausted through a fan or ventilator. Canada Blower provides a number of centrifugal roof exhausters and gravity relief ventilators for jet bridge exhaust applications.

Industrial Blowers for Ventilation

Enclosed or underground parking garages require ventilation to remove harmful vehicle emissions and other pollutants, while providing fresh air. Ventilation is also a requirement in the event of a fire to remove smoke and to provide a clear access for firefighters. Exhaust and supply fans are used in conjunction with ductwork to distribute air throughout the parking garage, providing a common system for both pollution and smoke control. Twin City Fan manufactures a complete line of axial flow fans designed for parking garage ventilation systems. Restroom exhaust fans are primarily used to reduce moisture and prevent mold buildup. As restrooms typically occupy a small space, restroom exhaust fans are considered low volume and generally provide 2 to 5 air exchanges per minute. These fans are mounted on the roof or in-line with the system’s ductwork. Canada Blower offers a full line of centrifugal roof & wall exhausters, inline centrifugal fans, and ceiling & cabinet ventilators to accommodate all restroom requirements and exhaust applications.

Industrial Inline Exhaust Fans

Rooftop exhaust fans are designed to remove heat and odors from buildings to improve air quality and occupant comfort. Areas such as cafeterias, locker rooms, office spaces, restrooms and warehouses often have unique requirements specified by local codes and utilize a wide range of rooftop exhaust fans. To accommodate these various types of environments and ventilation systems, Canada Blower Fan offers a complete line of products to support every rooftop exhaust application. These applications can range from clean airstreams with minimal filtration all way to high density offices and health care facilities that must comply with extremely stringent regulations. Gravity ventilators are used to equalize a building’s positive or negative pressure created by other fans in the system. These ventilators provide natural ventilation and are used for intake and relief applications. Canada Blower Fan offers both spun aluminum and hooded ventilators, featuring a low silhouette for low roof-lines. Louvered penthouse ventilators are available when aesthetics are not an important factor and feature extruded aluminum louvers. Sidewall exhaust and supply applications require panel fans to move large volumes of air at low static pressures. Panel fans are commonly used on the walls of warehouses and manufacturing facilities to supply outside air or to remove hot or noxious gases in exhaust configurations. Other typical applications include removing carbon dioxide from produce storage facilities, greenhouse ventilation, and parking garages. Panel fans can be mounted directly to the wall panel, which is especially useful when ductwork is unnecessary. Each fan can be customized to the individual needs of the customer, including aluminum or stainless steel construction, explosion proof motors, gravity or motorized dampers, corrosion resistant coatings, and fully reversible propellers.

Industrial Fans

Indoor swimming pools require air moving equipment for exhausting moisture-laden, corrosive and chlorinated air. Fans and duct systems must be designed to withstand these elements. That is why Canada Blower offers a wide selection of fans and construction materials, including fiberglass, alloys, and specialty coatings to prevent the potential corrosion associated with these environments.

Industrial Ventilator Blowers & Fans

Ventilation is a crucial component for any mining operation. Inadequate ventilation can expose miners to high levels of dangerous gases, dust particulates, and excessive heat. The consequences of prolonged exposure to these elements can pose a series of health related complications. We understand the significance of selecting the right ventilation equipment for maximizing the air quality in mines, which is why Buffalo Blower offers a comprehensive line of products suited for the most rigorous mining ventilation applications. We also offer many special design features such as non sparking units, explosion proof motors and specialty guards. Stairwells are frequently the primary escape route in the event of a fire emergency and may also serve as the primary access route for firefighting teams. In these smoke control zones, fans are used to pressurize stairwells to limit smoke infiltration by maintaining positive pressure across closed stairwell doors. Fans used for stairwell pressurization are designed to operate at low enough pressures so that doors can be safely opened during evacuation. Because occupant safety is the most important aspect when facing a fire emergency, Buffalo Blower offers a complete line of smoke and heat exhaust fans designed for stairwell pressurization.

Industrial Pressure Blower Fans

Service stations require vehicle exhaust systems to maintain indoor air quality for customers and employees. These systems attach to a vehicle’s exhaust pipe to draw hazardous emissions out of the building. The fans used in these systems are attached to small hose and must be capable of producing high pressures due to the air velocity required to exhaust the fumes. Buffalo Blower offers a wide selection of compact pressure blowers and radial bladed fans capable of meeting the high pressures requirements of vehicle exhaust systems.

Industrial Blowers, Inline Exhaust fans and Propeller Fans for Aeration

Industrial Blowers, Inline Exhaust fans and Propeller Fans for Aeration

Industrial aeration involves moving air through either a solid or fluid medium bed and is used for various purposes. Depending on specific material being aerated, our fans are utilized for moisture control in applications such as grain bin storage, and also provide oxygen and control moisture/temperature in composting applications. Due to varying environmental conditions, fans used in aeration systems often require special construction such as fiberglass, alloys and specialty coatings. The control and containment of air containing a biological hazard is crucial for maintaining a safe environment. An air handling system designed to move such material must be designed to ensure contaminated air does not escape. This can be accomplished with an induced draft fan that will maintain a negative pressure, so that any leaks in a system draw outside atmosphere in, as opposed to allowing the contaminated air out. Biomass and Incineration are two new methods of generating power that utilize renewable biological fuels and refuse as their main fuel source. The process of converting these fuels into an energy source requires the use of specialized boiler system. Issues such as dust loading and corrosion can become major concerns if your system does not utilize the proper fan for exhausting particulate and gas emissions. That is why selecting the right fan is crucial for optimizing the performance and longevity of your overall system. We offer a wide range of underfire combustion air fans, overfire air fans and induced draft fans needed to stand up to the harsh operating environments.

Large Industrial Fans

In the textile industry, humidity of the air is crucial for air quality and fabric production. The fibrous material manufactured in plants needs to maintain a specific humidity and temperature to be processed effectively. Textile manufacturers use air washers to cool, humidify, dehumidify and clean the air to prevent damage during production. Drum filters are typically used in the nonwoven industry for manufacturing products such as diapers, sanitary napkins, and surgical pads. Drum filters have become the standard in the nonwoven industry and are known for their efficiency and compact designs with relatively large air flows. Twin City Fan is a leading supplier of the main system fans located on the clean side of the process. Buffalo Blower fans are often selected for this particular application because of their ability to cover a wide performance range and various operating conditions. Forming fans play an integral role for forming products in the nonwoven industry, such as diapers. These fans create the negative pressure in the forming chamber, giving the product its shape. We typically provide our model RBW radial bladed fan with a backplate for this application. The RBW is capable of producing high static pressures at medium to low airflows.

Air washers balance the required humidity of the plant air by humidifying the air during the dry seasons and dehumidifying the air when conditions are more humid. This is accomplished by using re-circulated heated or chilled water that is sprayed into the air. Buffalo Blower fans are used to draw air through these air washer systems and typically provide adjustable pitch axial fans in the range of 2.5″ to 4″ static pressure. Regardless of the size of your operation and system requirements, Buffalo Blower is capable of manufacturing virtually any size fan or blower to meet your exact specifications. Air strippers are used on drum filters for removing material build up on the filter. The vacuum nozzles on the filter remove the fiber/particulate which are then disposed of or used for reclaiming the material. The fans used in this particular application require higher pressure at a relatively low airflow along with a radial blade design for handling the material. Because of these factors Buffalo Blower model ORB incorporates radial blades with a backplate to prevent long stingy material from collecting around the shaft.

High Temperature Blowers

Flue gas recirculation is a highly effective technique used for lowering Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions from burners. This is particularly crucial, as NOx is a significant pervasive pollutant that produces a negative array of health and environmental by-products. NOx emission levels can be greatly reduced in industrial boilers by reticulating used flue gases back into the system. This process lowers the peak combustion temperature and drops the percentage of oxygen in the combustion air/flue gas mixture, delaying the formation of NOx caused by high flame temperatures. TCF offers a wide range of centrifugal blowers specifically designed to be used with FGR systems.

Industrial Pressure Blowers

Forced Draft fans purpose is to provide a positive pressure to a system. This basic concept is used in a wide variety of industries but the term FD Fans is most often found in the boiler industry. Fans for boilers force ambient air into the boiler, typically through a preheater to increase overall boiler efficiency. Inlet or outlet dampers are used to control and maintain the system pressure. Typical fan arrangements are 3SI or 3DI which utilize a wheel center hung on the shaft with integral inlet boxes.

Industrial Blowers, Propeller Fans & Blower Fans

Industrial Blowers, Propeller Fans & Blower Fans

Industrial electric fans clearly do not use as much electricity as an air conditioner, circulating air and cooling it at a fast rate for a large space. With high-powered, energy-efficient motors, the larger motor of an industrial fan is actually guaranteed to save energy costs.

Industrial Blowers and Fans for Cooling

Air conditioning can often become too large of an expense for industrial areas, but the good news is that an industrial fan can bring some much needed relief in this case. Industrial electric fans can be quite helpful for places where heat stratification, dampness, and stagnant air become frequent problems. Also, for high static pressure an industrial fan is what you need. Also known as an industrial electric blower, these units replace air as well by blowing out the old and stagnant air for a wide area that otherwise would collect this air without replenishing it in entirety.

Industrial Blowers and Radial Blower Fans for Ventilation

Industrial warehouses, especially profit from these large units because the fans can support a higher CFM rating without the vibrations of a smaller fan. Most electric industrial fans have blades of a higher more durable construction, usually consisting of some kind of metal. This allows the blades to move more air at one time without all the force being applied to the fan and making the motor work harder.

Industrial Blowers & Fans Types

Industrial fans include several types such as duct fans, roof and ceiling ventilators, wall mounted fans, pressure blowers, and freestanding units with different mounting options. For extreme conditions and plants, drum fans can be used to move even larger amounts of air. These types of fans come with wheels attached and can be rolled to the area that circulation is needed the most. Some manufacturers even sell just the fan heads for a more freedom and a reduced assembly and cost on the company.

Versatility of Industrial Blowers and Fans

Powerful motors for reducing excessive noise are used in industrial fans. The motor will not be working at its top speed to produce the necessary airflow, therefore it will be quieter. Industrial electric fans are also very versatile; there are floor fans, wall mounted fans, and pedestal fans that all come in industrial grades. If you plan on a very large space, a pivoting fan is a good choice as you can manipulate the direction of the air and direct it to where it is needed most. Some even come with stands to make these larger fans easy to roll from place to place.

Industrial Fans & Blowers Efficiency

These motors are designed to change a large amount of electrical energy into useful fan work. Often as electric industrial fans are in operation for an entire day period, opposed to a home fan which is turned on only when people are home, or in a specific room, the industrial fan needs to be energy efficient for this extra use. These motors can handle more heat than a normal motor meaning less heat waste is produced. If you think you need an industrial fan for your business area, chances are that you do! Make the choice today for comfort and health and consider an industrial fan purchase.

Direct Drive Blowers

Direct Drive Blowers

Direct driven industrial blowers are used to move air and gas in ventilation applications. Their main function is to replace impure or contaminated air with fresh air by swirling it around. Almost every industry, including agricultural, chemical, medical, oil and gas, automotive, food processing, mining and construction use blowers for different purposes such as drying, reducing heat levels, reducing smoke and odors, processing and controlling gaseous fumes.

Industrial Blowers

Industrial blowers are manufactured using a range of durable plastics and metals, or a combination of both materials. For example, industrial blowers operating in corrosive environments are usually made of polypropylene because it provides greater structural integrity and corrosion resistance, and will never de-laminate. Typical recommendations in the construction of industrial blowers are – fiberglass for temperatures above 220 degrees, and metal if pressure is above 10 w.g. (water gage).

Industrial Blower Size

The size of the blower may be regulated by the size of the environment in which it is to be operated. For instance, some units are big enough to house both the fan and its power supply. Smaller, portable blowers are mainly used for cleanups and in spaces that require temporary circulation or air transfer.

Industrial Blower Classes

The air movement and control association recognizes three classes of industrial blowers, classified with numerical designation that is based on how the fan is constructed. The United States’ specifications for industrial blowers depend on the airflow in CFM (cubic feet per minute), static pressure in inches, water gage, altitude and approximate air temperature. Here’s an example:

Direct Drive Blower Application

An industrial blower application with 20,000 CFM at 6″ wg of pressure needs 12 industrial fans ranging from 30 to 60hp. While the recommended or optimal is a 36 wheel, with a 30 hp (horsepower) motor, this is achievable with a 24″ diameter wheel, or up to a 6″ wheel. The outlet velocity for the 36″” is 2611 ft. per minute. So, if it’s a 6″ diameter wheel, the velocity outlet will be 653″” per minute.
