High Temperature Blowers & Fans

Fans with ambient air cooling systems handling hot airstreams must have sufficient airflow and be kept in operation until airstream temperatures cool below 120 F to prevent damage to the fan unit. The Tubeaxial fan ambient air cooling system is only effective while fan is operating.

There are two major types of high temperature fans – centrifugal and axial:

Centrifugal Wheels:

Multiblade forward curve wheel. This type of wheel is usually specified where there is a necessity for large volumes of flow against low to medium static pressure requirements. The forward curve blade is that it delivers the same volume of air as either the backward or radial blade wheel, at a lower fan speed, which is important due to wheel stresses at elevated temperatures. This fan is the most common type used in all types of heat treatment operations except where a buildup of material on the blades could occur, as wheel unbalance would result.
Radial Blade, paddle wheel type fans. This type of wheel is usually specified where there is a necessity for medium volumes of flow against medium to large static pressures. The paddle wheel is considered a self cleaning type of wheel. It could be used where there are various materials or dust in the air stream. Due to its structurally strong design, it is used in many heat treatment applications at very high temperatures where maximum fan longevity is desired.

Axial Blade Wheels:

The axial blade wheel is usually specified where there is a need for very large volumes of flows against low static pressure. Axial wheel like the multi-blade forward curve type wheel could cause an axial fan to deliver different air volumes at the same static pressure, if the total pressure requirement of the fan system was underestimated. This type of fan is ideally suited where a large volume of flow is required with a minimum of duct work and is used extensively for small and large furnaces, such as aluminum annealing.

Large Industrial Fans & Extractor Fans

Large Industrial Fans

Today there are a wide range of commercial extractor fans available on the market to cover just about every application imaginable; from large commercial applications, such as restaurant kitchen extractor systems, to quiet airflow systems that are virtually silent in operation.

Axial Fans

While a commercial kitchen extraction system, commonly made in stainless steel can cost several thousand pounds to buy and install, a large vent-axia through wall extractor fan may be fine for a small hot food business such as a shop making toasted bacon sandwiches.

High Pressure Blower

The new quiet airflow extraction systems are proving popular as they have a high airflow, yet can barely be heard running. This helps keep environmental noise down, and this is often important in an office workplace.

Industrial Inline Fans

Commercial in-line fans are available that sit above the ceiling, often some distance from the room they are actually extracting the air from. They are connected to vents in the ceiling by ducting, which then connects to the inline fan, and then expels the air through more ducting to a grill in an outside wall.

This type of fan has to be used in certain “classes” of environment by law, whereby no electrically powered unit can be placed within a certain distance of damp areas, such as shower rooms as an example.

Industrial Blower Fans Buying

When buying a commercial extractor fan, you will have to take more into consideration than when purchasing a domestic extractor fan. The reason for this is that whilst a domestic fan may be cheap to buy and install, and can be replaced at a low cost if it breaks, the same cannot be said of a commercial extraction system.

Large Industrial Blower Fans Supplier

Most large commercial extractor fan installations will cost several thousand to buy, and will need professional installation. So given the investment you may make in one, you need to be buying with a reputable supplier, as you may be installing it in an environment where you may have to stop work if the extractor fan system breaks down, such as in a commercial kitchen.

Direct Drive Blowers

Direct driven industrial blowers are used to move air and gas in ventilation applications. Their main function is to replace impure or contaminated air with fresh air by swirling it around. Almost every industry, including agricultural, chemical, medical, oil and gas, automotive, food processing, mining and construction use blowers for different purposes such as drying, reducing heat levels, reducing smoke and odors, processing and controlling gaseous fumes.

Industrial Blowers

Industrial blowers are manufactured using a range of durable plastics and metals, or a combination of both materials. For example, industrial blowers operating in corrosive environments are usually made of polypropylene because it provides greater structural integrity and corrosion resistance, and will never de-laminate. Typical recommendations in the construction of industrial blowers are – fiberglass for temperatures above 220 degrees, and metal if pressure is above 10 w.g. (water gage).

Industrial Blower Size

The size of the blower may be regulated by the size of the environment in which it is to be operated. For instance, some units are big enough to house both the fan and its power supply. Smaller, portable blowers are mainly used for cleanups and in spaces that require temporary circulation or air transfer.

Industrial Blower Classes

The air movement and control association recognizes three classes of industrial blowers, classified with numerical designation that is based on how the fan is constructed. The United States’ specifications for industrial blowers depend on the airflow in CFM (cubic feet per minute), static pressure in inches, water gage, altitude and approximate air temperature. Here’s an example:

Direct Drive Blower Application

An industrial blower application with 20,000 CFM at 6″ wg of pressure needs 12 industrial fans ranging from 30 to 60hp. While the recommended or optimal is a 36 wheel, with a 30 hp (horsepower) motor, this is achievable with a 24″ diameter wheel, or up to a 6″ wheel. The outlet velocity for the 36″” is 2611 ft. per minute. So, if it’s a 6″ diameter wheel, the velocity outlet will be 653″” per minute.
