Since July 1, 2003, equipment manufactured for operation in potentially explosive environments has been required to comply with the European Directive 94/9/EC. This directive, commonly referred to as the ATEX Directive, applies to all countries in the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA). The ATEX Directive is a collection of EU directives outlining equipment installed and operated in potentially explosive atmospheres. The ATEX directive coordinates various technical and legal conditions throughout Europe to ensure a high level of safety for the end-user by reducing the explosion risk through established design methods. The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published EN 14986 as a standard specifically for the manufacture of fans for use in hazardous areas. This standard is a guide specifically for fan manufacturers to comply with the ATEX Directive.

Industrial Blowers & Fans – Air Handling Units

Air Handling Units (AHU) combine a fan (or several fans) with other components such as heating and/or cooling elements, filters, and dampers as a means to collectively condition the air in a building. AHU is a general term comprised of many specific types of air handlers including: Make-Up Air Units (MAU), Packaged Units (PU), Rooftop Units (RTU), and Energy Recovery Units (ERU). Air handlers range from very small, low CFM light-duty construction to very large, high CFM heavy-duty construction, and are used in many types of buildings that require air conditioning such as office buildings, hospitals, universities, schools, manufacturing facilities, and data centers. Typically, air passing through an AHU is clean and varies in temperature depending on the specific application. Energy consumption and noise are often important considerations when selecting a fan for an AHU. Plenum fans and DWDI fans are commonly found in these units, but are not used exclusively. Building elevator shafts require proper air moving equipment to provide smoke control in the event of a fire. Pressurization is used to prevent smoke from migrating through elevator shafts to other floors, similar to how fans are used to control smoke in stairwells. Today’s elevator pressurization systems are designed to allow elevators to be used by firefighting teams. However, some systems are designed for the evacuation of handicapped individuals. While small amounts of smoke in an elevator may be tolerated by firefighters, smoke in an elevator and its entry and exit paths is unacceptable. Backward Inclined Blowers

Backward Inclined Fans – Simple flat blades, but backwardly inclined to match the velocity pattern of the air passing through the fan wheel, which results in high-efficiency operation. These fans are typically used in high-volume, relatively low-pressure, clean air applications.

Centrifugal Blower Fans

Airfoil Centrifugal Fans are used for a wide range of applications in many industries, hollow-bladed airfoil fans are designed, engineered and tested for use in airstreams where high efficiency and quiet operation are required. They are used extensively for continuous service at ambient and elevated temperatures in forced and induced draft applications in the metals, chemical, power generation, paper, rock products, glass, resource recovery, incineration and other industries throughout the world.

Backward Inclined Blower Fans

Backward Curved Fans – Efficiencies nearly as high as the airfoil design. However, single-thickness metal blades prevent the possibility of dust particle buildup inside the blade. These fans can be built with long-lasting erosion-resistant liners. The robust design allows high tip-speed operation, and therefore this fan is often used in high-pressure applications. This design frequently offers the best compromise for long life and high efficiency.

Radial Blade Blowers

Radial Blade Blowers – Flat blades oriented in a radial pattern. These rugged fans offer high pressure capability with average efficiency. They are often fitted with erosion-resistant liners to extend the rotor life. The housing design is compact to minimize the floor space requirement.

Forward Curve Blower Fans

Forward-Curved Radial Tip Fans – This rugged design is used in high-volume flow rate applications when the pressure requirement is rather high and erosion resistance is necessary. It offers medium range efficiencies. A common application is the dirty side of a baghouse or precipitator. The design is more compact than airfoil, backward curved or backward inclined fans.

Industrial Blowers

Paddle-Wheel Blowers – This is an open impeller design without shrouds. Although the efficiency is not high, this fan is well suited for applications with extremely high dust loading. It can even be offered with field-replaceable blade liners from ceramic tiles or tungsten-carbide. This fan may also be used in high-temperature applications.

Forward Curve Blowers

Forward-Curve Fans – This “squirrel cage” impeller generates the highest volume flow rate (for a given tip speed) of all the centrifugal fans. Therefore, it is often the smallest physical package available. It is commonly used in high-temperature furnaces.

Industrial Exhaust Fans

Industrial Exhausters – Relatively inexpensive, medium-duty, steeply inclined flat-bladed fan for exhausting gases, conveying chips, etc.

Pre-Engineered Blade Blower Fans

Pre-engineered Fans – are series of fans of varying blade shapes that are usually available in only standard sizes. Because they are pre-engineered these fans may be available with relatively short delivery times. Often, pre-engineered rotors with various blade shapes may be installed into a common housing. These are often available in a wide range of volume and pressure requirements to meet the needs of many applications.

Industrial Pressure Blowers

Pressure Blowers – High-pressure, low-volume blowers used in combustion air applications in furnaces or to provide “blow-off” air for clearing and / or drying applications.

High Pressure Blowers – Surgeless

Surgeless Blowers – High-pressure, low-volume blowers with a reduced tendency for “surging” even at severely reduced flowrates. This allows extreme turndown (low-flow) without significant pulsation.

The main types of Axial Flow Fans include:

Axial Fans – High Temperature

High-Temperature Axial Fans – High-volume fans designed to operate against low flow resistance in industrial convection furnaces. These are found in either single-direction or bi-directional designs. Extremely rugged, they are most often used in high-temperature furnace (up to 1800 degF) applications.

Tube Axial Fans

Tube Axial Fans – Cataloged high-volume low-pressure fan line with a wide range of available sizes. Suitable for temperatures up to 250 degF.

Vaneaxial Fans

Vaneaxial Fans – Axial flow fans with higher pressure capability due to the presence of static vanes.

Variable Pitch Axial fans

Variable Pitch Axial fans – Axial fans with manually adjustable blade angles. This allows operation over a much wider range of volume/pressure relationships. The blades are adjusted periodically to optimize efficiency by matching the blade pitch to the varying conditions for the application. (Often used in mining applications).

Variable Pitch on-the-fly Axial Fans

Variable Pitch on-the-fly Axial Fans – These are similar to “Variable Pitch Axial Fans” except these include an internal mechanism that allows the blade pitch to be adjusted while the fan rotor is in motion. These versatile fans offer high-efficiency operation at many different points of operation.

Variable Speed Fans

Variable Speed Fans – All of the fans described above can be used in conjunction with a variable speed driver. This might be an adjustable frequency AC controller, a DC motor and drive, a steam turbine driver, etc. Flow control by means of variable speed is typically smoother and more efficient than by means of damper control. Significant power savings (with reduced cost of operation) are possible if variable speed fan drives are used for applications that require reduced flow operation for a significant portion of the system operating life.

It is also commonly used in pneumatic conveying systems. Industrial pressure blowers and high pressure radial fans are supplied in cast aluminum, cast iron, or all-welded construction to prevent flexing at high pressure. Available in direct drive arrangements 4 / 4V / 4H / 7 / 8 and belt drive arrangements 1 / 9 S / 9T / 9H. Capacities: to 10,000 CFM. Single stage pressure blowers develop up to 4 psi static pressure. Two stage pressure blowers and multistage pressure blowers are for higher pressure.

By adding ceramic tile or chromium carbide wheel and housing liners, Northern Fan Co.’s PA fans easily handle abrasive materials. In particular, fans with ceramic tile liners are extremely effective in pulverized coal applications, handling up to 250 grains per cubic feet of air. Industrial Blowers in the Environment

At this juncture it is prudent to reiterate that a fan running at a particular speed can have an infinite number of operating points all along its characteristic curve. The fan will interact with the system to produce an operating point at the intersection of the system curve and the fan curve. Northern Industrial Supply Company radial blade blower fans can be in single width single inlet (SWSI), or double width double inlet (DWDI). Capacities: to 500,000 CFM. Northern Industrial Supply Company radial blade blower fans (industrial radial blade blowers) are supplied in welded heavy gauge steel construction to prevent flexing at high pressure. Radial Fans are available in direct drive arrangements 4/4V/4H/7/8 and belt drive arrangements 1/3/9/9S/9T/9H. Static pressure up to 100 inches water gauge depending on the class of construction. Typical class of construction is Class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Radial Blade Blowers

Aluminum wheel, Steel wheel, or Alloy wheels are available on Northern Industrial Supply Company radial blade blower fans: industrial radial blowers and fans are supplied with aluminum wheel or corten wheel to meet requirements of AMCA A, and AMCA B spark resistant construction. Mild steel wheels are of all welded construction. They are used on pressure applications, material handling applications (plastic scrap, paper trim, granular material, low density bulk material) where wheel is reinforced with support gussets, or made of abraision resistant construction, or furnished of high strenght steel. Stainless steel wheel in 304 SS, 316 SS, 316 SS, 2205 SS are supplied for corrosive applications, or high temeparature applications. The pressure curve remains stable from fully open to fully closed position.

Heat fan construction can be furnished for up to 1000 F opertation and includes high temperature paint (up to 1000 F), special alloy construction, shaft cooler, shaft-cooler guard, and steel wheel, or alloy wheel, with steel, or alloy housing.

Shaft seal and low leakage construction for demanding low-leakage applications can be furnished with shaftss straightened to close tolerance to minimize “run-out” and ensure smooth operation. Teflon shaft seal, ceramic shaft seal and lubricated shaft seals (Buna, Teflon, Viton) are standard. Red silicone gasketing is provided for low leakage construction and for high temperature construction. Heavy-duty spherical roller bearings are standard.

Cladding for sound attenuation and silencers for low-noise installations consists of 2 inches mineral-wool insulation covered with a welded steel jacket. As an inexpensive alternative is offered slide-on acoustic cloth jackets. Inlet silencer/outlet silencer are supplied with matching flanges for further attenuation of the noise level.

Roof Exhaust Fans & Ventilators

Proper ventilation requires that there be a movement or circulation of the air within the space and that the temperature and humidity be maintained within a range that allows adequate evaporation of perspiration from the skin. It was formerly believed that the discomfort, headache, and lethargy commonly associated with poor ventilation were caused entirely by the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide and the decrease in the oxygen content of the air. There is evidence to show, however, that the deleterious effects result largely from interference with the heat-regulating mechanism of the body. Lack of air currents and the increase in relative humidity and temperature (especially noticeable in crowded, poorly ventilated places) prevent normal evaporation of perspiration and loss of heat from the surface of the skin.

A simple roof ventilator is essentially an opening in the roof with a cover to keep out rain and to prevent winds from interfering with its functioning. Natural convection is an appreciable aid to ventilation in a large building only if it contains sources of large amounts of heat. A further useful adjunct is a fan fan, device for agitating air or gases or moving them from one location to another. Mechanical fans with revolving blades are used for ventilation, in manufacturing, in winnowing grain, to remove dust, cuttings, or other waste, or to provide draft for a fire. The addition of distribution ducts to the fan and a system for forcing air into the building provides greater efficiency. Outlets are designed to attain maximum mixing of air and to move large amounts of air at low velocity so that temperature layers are eliminated. Factories have special suction hoods and enclosures to draw away localized dust, fumes, and heat. Incoming air may be cleaned of dust by filters or electrostatic precipitators.

Roof Exhaust Fan Ventilation

Natural ventilation depends on winds outside and convection currents inside a building. Winds raise air pressure slightly on the windward side of a building and lower it slightly on the lee side. The pressure difference promotes circulation into the building on the windward side and out of it on the lee side. Convection currents are caused by the sinking of colder and therefore heavier air, which displaces the warmer air. A building may have a roof ventilator to allow the rising warm air to escape. If there is an opening to the outside at the bottom of the building, fresh, cool air will be drawn in.

Deep mines, underwater tunnels, and other subterranean and submarine environments require elaborate mechanically operated systems for maintaining the air supply in a healthful condition. The lives of those working in, or traveling through, such areas depend upon a constant supply of fresh air; not only must the systems used be highly efficient, but there should be provision for emergencies in case of failure of the apparatus in operation. An outgrowth of studies of problems of ventilation is the development of methods of air conditioning heat pump is a reversible device that does mechanical work to extract heat from a cooler place and deliver heat to a warmer place. The heat delivered to the warmer place is, approximately, the sum of the original heat and the work done.

Such systems, unlike ordinary methods of ventilation, are independent of outdoor atmospheric conditions and can, therefore, maintain the indoor atmosphere at the most healthful temperature and humidity and can free the air of dust and other undesirable materials. They accomplish this, however, at a considerable cost in energy.

A radial Blower fan is used in a large number of different industries, whether that be for the fan in your car or a fan in your computer to keep it from heating up too much. The word Radial Blower means spreading out of a common centre which is how most fans work. Obviously to do a large area you need a large fan so having it mounted can be a benefit whilst having it freestanding can also be a benefit because it can be moved if need be. There are also different noise levels of these fans but most fans these days are relatively quiet especially in an area such as a factory.
