Industrial Centrifugal Blower Fans & Axial Fans

Backward Inclined Blowers

Backward Inclined Fans – Simple flat blades, but backwardly inclined to match the velocity pattern of the air passing through the fan wheel, which results in high-efficiency operation. These fans are typically used in high-volume, relatively low-pressure, clean air applications.

Centrifugal Blower Fans

Airfoil Centrifugal Fans are used for a wide range of applications in many industries, hollow-bladed airfoil fans are designed, engineered and tested for use in airstreams where high efficiency and quiet operation are required. They are used extensively for continuous service at ambient and elevated temperatures in forced and induced draft applications in the metals, chemical, power generation, paper, rock products, glass, resource recovery, incineration and other industries throughout the world.

Backward Inclined Blower Fans

Backward Curved Fans – Efficiencies nearly as high as the airfoil design. However, single-thickness metal blades prevent the possibility of dust particle buildup inside the blade. These fans can be built with long-lasting erosion-resistant liners. The robust design allows high tip-speed operation, and therefore this fan is often used in high-pressure applications. This design frequently offers the best compromise for long life and high efficiency.

Radial Blade Blowers

Radial Blade Blowers – Flat blades oriented in a radial pattern. These rugged fans offer high pressure capability with average efficiency. They are often fitted with erosion-resistant liners to extend the rotor life. The housing design is compact to minimize the floor space requirement.

Forward Curve Blower Fans

Forward-Curved Radial Tip Fans – This rugged design is used in high-volume flow rate applications when the pressure requirement is rather high and erosion resistance is necessary. It offers medium range efficiencies. A common application is the dirty side of a baghouse or precipitator. The design is more compact than airfoil, backward curved or backward inclined fans.

Industrial Blowers

Paddle-Wheel Blowers – This is an open impeller design without shrouds. Although the efficiency is not high, this fan is well suited for applications with extremely high dust loading. It can even be offered with field-replaceable blade liners from ceramic tiles or tungsten-carbide. This fan may also be used in high-temperature applications.

Forward Curve Blowers

Forward-Curve Fans – This “squirrel cage” impeller generates the highest volume flow rate (for a given tip speed) of all the centrifugal fans. Therefore, it is often the smallest physical package available. It is commonly used in high-temperature furnaces.

Industrial Exhaust Fans

Industrial Exhausters – Relatively inexpensive, medium-duty, steeply inclined flat-bladed fan for exhausting gases, conveying chips, etc.

Pre-Engineered Blade Blower Fans

Pre-engineered Fans – are series of fans of varying blade shapes that are usually available in only standard sizes. Because they are pre-engineered these fans may be available with relatively short delivery times. Often, pre-engineered rotors with various blade shapes may be installed into a common housing. These are often available in a wide range of volume and pressure requirements to meet the needs of many applications.

Industrial Pressure Blowers

Pressure Blowers – High-pressure, low-volume blowers used in combustion air applications in furnaces or to provide “blow-off” air for clearing and / or drying applications.

High Pressure Blowers – Surgeless

Surgeless Blowers – High-pressure, low-volume blowers with a reduced tendency for “surging” even at severely reduced flowrates. This allows extreme turndown (low-flow) without significant pulsation.

The main types of Axial Flow Fans include:

Axial Fans – High Temperature

High-Temperature Axial Fans – High-volume fans designed to operate against low flow resistance in industrial convection furnaces. These are found in either single-direction or bi-directional designs. Extremely rugged, they are most often used in high-temperature furnace (up to 1800 degF) applications.

Tube Axial Fans

Tube Axial Fans – Cataloged high-volume low-pressure fan line with a wide range of available sizes. Suitable for temperatures up to 250 degF.

Vaneaxial Fans

Vaneaxial Fans – Axial flow fans with higher pressure capability due to the presence of static vanes.

Variable Pitch Axial fans

Variable Pitch Axial fans – Axial fans with manually adjustable blade angles. This allows operation over a much wider range of volume/pressure relationships. The blades are adjusted periodically to optimize efficiency by matching the blade pitch to the varying conditions for the application. (Often used in mining applications).

Variable Pitch on-the-fly Axial Fans

Variable Pitch on-the-fly Axial Fans – These are similar to “Variable Pitch Axial Fans” except these include an internal mechanism that allows the blade pitch to be adjusted while the fan rotor is in motion. These versatile fans offer high-efficiency operation at many different points of operation.

Variable Speed Fans

Variable Speed Fans – All of the fans described above can be used in conjunction with a variable speed driver. This might be an adjustable frequency AC controller, a DC motor and drive, a steam turbine driver, etc. Flow control by means of variable speed is typically smoother and more efficient than by means of damper control. Significant power savings (with reduced cost of operation) are possible if variable speed fan drives are used for applications that require reduced flow operation for a significant portion of the system operating life.

Axial Ventilator Fan vs Axial Blower Fan

Axial Ventilator Fan vs Axial Blower Fan

A variable pitch blade in axial fan blower is used where precise control of static pressure within supply ducts is required. The fan wheel will spin at a constant RPM . The blades follow the control pitch hub. As the hub moves toward the rotor the blades increase their angle of attack and an increase in flow results.

Axial Ventilators

Axial flow ventilators have blades that force air to move along the shaft about which the blades rotate. Axial fans blow air across the axis of the fan, linearly, hence their name. This type of fan is used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from small cooling fans for electronics to the giant fans used in wind tunnels.

Some examples of axial fans are:

Table fan – Basic elements of a typical table fan include the fan blade, base, armature and lead wires, motor, blade guard, motor housing, oscillator gearbox, and oscillator shaft. The oscillator is a mechanism that motions the fan from side to side. The axle comes out on both ends of the motor, one end of the axle is attached to the blade and the other is attached to the oscillator gearbox. The motor case joins to the gearbox to contain the rotor and stator. The oscillator shaft combines to the weighted base and the gearbox. A motor housing covers the oscillator mechanism. The blade guard joins to the motor case for safety.

Electro-mechanical fans – among collectors, are rated according to their condition, size, age, and number of blades. Four-blade designs are the most common. Five-blade or six-blade designs are rare. The materials from which the components are made, such as brass, are important factors in fan desirability.

Ceiling fan with light. Ceiling fan – A fan suspended from the ceiling of a room is a ceiling fan.

In automobiles, a mechanical fan provides engine cooling and prevents the engine from overheating by blowing or sucking air through a coolant-filled radiator. It can be driven with a belt and pulley off the engine’s crankshaft or an electric fan switched on/off by a thermostatic switch.

Centrifugal Fans

In centrifugal fan, as opposed to axial flow fan, the air is moving perpendicularly to the fan shaft. Often called a “squirrel cage” (due to its similarity in appearance to exercise wheels for pet rodents), the centrifugal fan has a moving component (called an impeller) that consists of a central shaft about which a set of blades, or ribs, are positioned. Centrifugal fans blow air at right angles to the intake of the fan, and spin the air outwards to the outlet (by deflection and centrifugal force). The impeller rotates, causing air to enter the fan near the shaft and move perpendicularly from the shaft to the opening in the scroll-shaped fan casing. A centrifugal fan produces more pressure for a given air volume, and is used where this is desirable such as in leaf blowers, hair driers, air mattress inflators, inflatable structures, and various industrial purposes. They are typically noisier than comparable axial fans.

A mixed flow fan – is an air moving device in between axial flow fan and centrifugal fan. Mixed Flow fans are an excellent choice for return air, supply, or general ventilation applications where low sound is critical. As compared to similarly sized tubular centrifugals and vane axials, a mixed flow fan will be 5-20 dB quieter! In addition, the mixed flow wheel is extremely efficient and will cut down on operating expenses.

Centrifugal Blower

Centrifugal Blowers

A centrifugal fan is a blower designed to move air or gases in a confined area. The centrifugal blower has a number of blades mounted around the hub, which turns on a shaft that passes through the housing. The gas enters the side of the fan wheel and by use of centrifugal force (hence the name) accelerates over the fan blades. A centrifugal blower is usually used in factories or large open places that need air flow.

High Temperature Fans & Blowers Applications

Tough applications mean tough fans and blowers by Northern Industrial Co. Northern Industrial is a world wide distributor of industrial process ans OEM fans and blowers, as well as fan / blower components; including high pressure blowers, high temperature fans, spark resistant and explosion proof ventilators, tubeaxial and vaneaxial high pressure ventilators. Canada Blower also does existing fans and blowers repairs, re-build, as well as dynamical wheels balancing. High-efficiency impellers result in low power consumption, operating costs, and quieter operation. All metal hardware is completely sealed from exposure to corrosion by incapsulating into FRP or plastic; the steel support frame and motor base are powder coated with a corrosion-resistant finish. In addition to being highly resistant to chemical corrosion, PP fans are self-extinguishing and will not support combustion.

This could be an underground carpark, a gymnasium or any other open space with static air. There are many different centrifugal blowers on the market today and choosing one will depend on a number of factors.

Centrifugal Blowers & Fans Blades

The centrifugal blower has a number of blades mounted around the hub, which turns on a shaft that passes through the housing.

A Centrifugal fan can come in three different types of fan blades. They can come with forward curved blades, backward curved blades and straight radial blades. The type you need will come down to what the conditions are within the area in which you intend to use the device.

When inquiring about purchasing a centrifugal fan you will more than likely need someone from the company in which your purchasing the fan to come and take a look at the conditions the fan will be placed and also to check what kind of air pressure there is within the area.

Centrifugal Blower Size

The size of the area in which the centrifugal blower is to be used will obviously play a major part in the decision of how large it needs to be and how much air it can actually blow through the area. There are many different sizes that you can get to cover any area but depending on your circumstances you may need more than one to do the job adequately.

The type of air that is in the premises will also play a large role in which type of Centrifugal Blower you need. If the centrifugal fan is to be used in an area where the air conditions are standard then no adjustments will need to be made to the actual fan itself. On the other hand if you are going to operate the fan in other types of air density then adjustments can be made to the static pressure and brake horsepower.

Centrifugal Blower Placement

Another point to be made when you are interested in purchasing a centrifugal blower is where you intend to put it. There are many different styles of centrifugal blowers, they include roof and ceiling ventilators, pressure and volume blowers, duct fans and blowers or freestanding fans and plenum fans.

There is obviously an advantage with freestanding fans as you have the opportunity of moving it to different areas of the building / factory, which is an advantage. If you do have it mounted then it is out of the way and not taking up valuable room. Most Industrial fans come with a safety guard on them now which is made so that no human appendages can accidentally go into the fan. Most centrifugal fans come with an electric motor although they do make ones now which run off an generator also. This is a huge advantage if there is a power failure within the premises.

Most industrial fans make some kind of noise but with a lot of the new models being released now the noise level is minimal. Some can make more noise than others but this depends on the size of the fan and also the conditions which it is working in.
